When the sweltering heat takes its toll, all I want to do is pleasure my taste buds to something chilled and refreshing that will beat the heat. Slush, mojito, iced tea, granita, frappe are there but ice cream holds its unique place among the all-time favorite chillers and frozen delights. The yummy frozen desserts called ice creams are made in countless flavors to suite different palates and are desired by millions around the globe.

However, being a slightly weird foodie my passion for ice cream extends beyond the summer months. I would love if my favorite ice cream was available to me 24×7, twelve months of the year. I think some people might think it is a bit too much to ask but hey, what is a passion if you are not obsessed with it?

Starbucks, the coffee house giant is not backing up on its campaign of putting messages on its coffee cups despite a national uproar and threat of boycott. The reason for the uproar being that some felt the messages are anti god. The actual controversy started when a customer became read a quote that stated:

“Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure.”

The news became a hot topic. The quote was actually written by Bill Schell, a Starbucks customer from London. The quote was included as part of Starbucks’ “The Way I See It” campaign which aimed at collecting different viewpoints and spark discussions.

Ken Peck of Lakeland also felt a message to be anti-christian, the message stated;
‘Heaven is totally overrated. It seems boring. Clouds, listening to people play the harp. It should be somewhere you can’t wait to go, like a luxury hotel. Maybe blue skies and soft music were enough to keep people in line in the 17th century, but Heaven has to step it up a bit. They’re basically getting by because they only have to be better than Hell. — Joel Stein, columnist for the Los Angeles Times’.

Such messages have flabbergasted most of the people but Starbucks; it seems is in no hurry to make any apologies. Tricia Moriarty, Starbucks communications manager, said, “We are committed to this program. We cover topics such as theater, film, the environment, food and sports. The cups are not pro- or anti-religion per se.”

Some quotes on other cups which can be considered as pro-God are:

‘You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He wanted you alive and created you for a purpose. Focusing on yourself will never reveal your purpose. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. Only in God do we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance, and our destiny. — Dr. Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose-Driven Life.”

‘It’s tragic that extremists co-opt the notion of God, and that hipsters and artists reject spirituality out of hand. I don’t have a fixed idea of God. But I feel that it’s us - the messed-up, the half-crazy, the burning, the questing - that need God, a lot more than the goody-two-shoes do. — Mike Doughty, musician.’

But complaints are coming that this way; Starbucks is trying to force God on its customers. Whether pro or anti God, the quotes have indeed landed Starbucks fishing in troubled waters.

Hmmm...what is the mantra for cooking good and tasty food? Are the kitchen gadgets important to do so? Does the taste of food lies in the gadgets being used? Time for me to answer this! No, not exactly. Yes, we do need some basic cooking equipment to cook food but the latest tech gadgets are not really necessary.

Whatever has to be done has to be done by you and not your gadgets. But what about so and so chef cooking with those glossy and uber clean equipments? Let me remind you here that they are TV chefs and you are not and they get all that stuff for free, you don’t.

To cook some awesome food, you just need some plain utensils like, knives the plastic ones indeed), some stainless steel bowls, Sturdy tongs, sheet pan, a plastic or wooden cutting board, a vegetable peeler, a can opener, some pans and I guess, that’s it. See such a few items!

The Complete Inessentials

*BREAD MACHINE: Why do you need that? Go and buy some bread from the market!

*MICROWAVE: It may be the need of the hour due o tight schedule we follow, but it is not really essential if you think carefully.

*STAND MIXER: If you are not one of those baked food fan, then you can easily do without this.

*BONING/FILLETING KNIVES: I seriously don’t think we need it, but it is indeed worth to be a decoration in the kitchen.

*WOK: Only if you have enough space and cash will it appear useful to you.

*STOCKPOT: Throw it away; you are not cooking for hundreds of people.

*ANYTHING MADE OF COPPER : I hardly cook in copper utensils, moreover if I remember my biology lesson well, it reacts with food and so is dangerous.

*RICE COOKER: I guess a pressure cooker is enough. So, you don’t really need it.

*COUNTERTOP CONVECTION OVEN, ROTISSERIE, OR ‘ROASTER’: Not on my personnel list. You can think over it.

In a lame man’s language it will keep hot things (not talking about your chic) hot and cool things really cool. And you have no chances of burning your hands because the handle remains cold, no matter what’s the temperature inside.

Technology, science, technology and technology! Yes! You got my point, what I mean to say is technology is everywhere, find it in your bedroom, bathroom and now even in your kitchen. Take for example, this CNC toaster which if and when connected to your computer you can print designs on the toasts. Cool! Isn’t that?

Hey, no need to worry; this doesn’t use ink to print the required designs. All you need to feed it is some bread, connect it your computer and it will design your bread with hot air. Yes! That is its way of working. Now, you can at the breakfast remind your husband to bring the veggies from the market, tell your kids they re getting late for school or just say an ‘I love you’ to your honey with the breakfast.
